Wilson:
Enclosed are the laboratory results of the June 23 , 1987 , soil
sampling at the subject site. Soil sampling locations are shown on
Figure 1 . The results of the three stockpile samples , TSP- 1 ,
TSP-2 , and TSP-3 indicated no detectable purgeable halocarbons
(U .S . Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8010 ) , total
petroleum fuel hydrocarbons ( EPA 8015 , modified) , benzene, toluene,
and xylene (BTX ) (EPA 8020 ) , or polychlorinated biphenyls ( PCBs)
(EPA 8080 ) constituents.
The results of the one soil sample, TEA-1 , taken from the edge of
the asphalt, indicated significant waste oil product. Results
indicated 4 , 875 parts per million ( ppm) EPA 8015 , 8 parts per
billion trichloroethylene (TCE) (constituent detected under EPA
8010 ) , and 0 . 3 ppm EPA 8080 . EPA 8020 constituents were
nondetectable in this sample.
It is possible that the waste oil leaked from the underground
storage tank when it was removed. The released waste oil then
traveled across the paved lot to the edge of the asphalt ( see
Figure 1 ) . The waste oil in the soil at the edge of the asphalt is
probably a result of the local spill . However, the possibility
exists that the detectable product could be from the components
used in making asphalt.
Additional soil sampling from along the edge of the asphalt is
recommended to determine the source and extent of waste oil
product. These samples should be collected from the potentially
clean soil outside the plume of the waste oil spill . Samples
723 S STREET SACRAMENTO,CA 95814 • (916)444-0123
