••
04 January 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 95-0106
• Analyze selected samples for physicochemical properties, microbiological enumeration, total
organic content(TOC), dry bulk density, soil moisture content, porosity and permeability to
model transportation of dissolved hydrocarbons.
The analyses for physicochemical properties and microbiological enumeration will be useful to
evaluate the site for natural attenuation, enhanced bioremediation or bioremediation should
remediation of the plume be appropriate, and to model fate and transport of the hydrocarbon mass.
In addition, soil saturation data will aid delineation of the true saturation zone.
The procedures for advancing the soil probe borings, collecting and preserving soil and ground water
samples, and constructing boring logs will be the same as described in Work Plan for Soil and
Ground Water Investigation, dated 30 November 1995, with the following exceptions:
• O-rings will be utilized on all down-hole connections in ground water sampling equipment
to minimize cross contamination of deeper ground water by shallower ground water.
• The continuous cores will be obtained utilizing a macro-sampler with a 4-foot acetate liner.
Soil samples for laboratory analysis will be collected from the continuous cores by cutting
a six-inch section from the acetate liner and will be preserved by covering the open ends with
Teflon sheets, capping and sealing with tape. The samples will then be labeled and stored in
a chilled container pending shipment under chain-of-custody to a DHS-certified analytical
laboratory.
• The soil sample collected from the hand auger boring(s) will be collected with a metric soil
sampler loaded with one 2-inch diameter, 6-inch length brass sleeve and will be driven with
a slide hammer. The collected soil sample will be preserved in the same manner as the other
soil samples.
• The water sample from the hand auger boring,if present, will be collected with a disposable
bailer and will be preserved in the same manner as all other collected ground water samples.
If ground water is not apparent in the primary hand auger boring at total depth, the boring will be left
open for several hours to allow the fine-grained soil a chance to yield water to the boring. Soil
generated from the hand auger boring is anticipated to be clean and will be containerized in a 55-
gallon DOT-approved drum for storage at 104 West Beverly Place pending laboratory analysis of
the soil sample. If not contaminated, the soil will then be spread on the storage site. The lower
portion of the hand auger boring(s) and the probe boring on the residential properties will be
abandoned with portland cement, the upper 1.5 feet will be backfilled with native soil or top soil to
minimize the impact on the residential landscaping. Other probe borings will be backfilled to surface
grade with portland cement.
Advanced Geo Environmental,Inc.
