1
George F. Schuler, Inc.
1705 N. Broadway, Stockton, California
' Phase I Remedial Report
1
1.0 Project Identification
This assessment has been conducted to further define the lateral and vertical extent of
' gasoline in the soil and ground water at the former underground storage tank facility of
George F. Schuler, Inc. (Figure 1). The assessment also included the installation of a
monitoring well and soil gas extraction wells for the removal of contamination within the
' vadose zone.
2.0 Site Description and History
On August 27, 1992 SEMCO, under permit, removed two (2) underground gasoline
storage tanks along with the associated piping. Soil samples taken at 15 feet in depth
' disclosed h=igh concentrations of gasoline, Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes, and Ethyl. Benzene
(BTX&E). A Re-Excavation Work Plan, dated October 7, 1992, was submitted by
SEMCO to the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, which proposed
an excavation 25 by 25 feet wide to a maximum depth of 30 feet, and logged by WIC
Environmental Consultant's registered geologist.
' On October 27, 1992 SEMCO re-excavated the former underground tank facility at
George Schuler's. WHF screened the soil with a portable PID and logged the excavation.
Highly contaminated soils were encountered during the excavation but appeared to be
intermittent and layered instead of decreasing in concentration consistently with depth. At
a depth of 30 feet gasoline odor was still present in the soil from the floor and sidewalls of
the excavation. The excavation was terminated at this depth and samples were taken,
' under the direction of the local regulatory agent (Appendix A).
Soil samples taken, for laboratory analysis, of the side walls at varying depths were non
' detect for gasoline and BTX&E. The floor sample taken-at 30 feet in depth disclosed
concentrations of gasoline along with BTX&E (Appendix B).
' 3.0 Scope of Work
In December of 1992, WHF Environmental conducted three soil borings in the vicinity of
' the former underground tanks (Figure 2). The first boring, MW-1 (B-1), was located in
the center of the former excavation. The boring was drilled through a 30 foot conduit
installed during backfilling of the excavation and initially terminated at about 47 feet in
depth due to the influence of surface water from a broken water line. This boring was
completed in June of 1993 and developed into a monitoring well.
' The second and third borings, B-2 and B-3, were located to the west and south of the
former tank excavation to help in the lateral definition of the soil contamination.
