Mr. `Fran Forkas
January 13, 1989
Page 4
MONITORING PROGRAM
Parameters to be measured and the frequency of measurements
are defined in the Waste Discharge Permit . In collecting the ,
groundwater, it is important to take the necessary precautions
to obtain samples that are representative of the water- .passing
the monitoring well at the time of sampling. Current sampling
practice for obtaining representative samples involves the
following procedures :
I . Pump or bail a minimum of four well volumes from the
well . A well volume is computed each time the well is
sampled and is the volume of water in the bore hole, including
the water in the packing outside the well casing. The volume
is computed by subtracting the distance measured to the water
surface from the total depth of the well and multiplying this
result by the area of the borehole.
2 . After the 4 volumes have been removed, measure the pH
and specific conductance of a -sample using portable
instruments and record the data. This data should be retained
for future reference.
3. Pump or bail another well volume and repeat step 2
field measurements .
4 . Compare the values for pH and specific conductance.
If they are the same, collect samples in appropriate
containers for the remainder of the parameters to be measured.
If there is a significant difference, repeat step 3. until two
successive field measurements yield similar results .
SUMMARY
Four wells are recommended for monitoring the groundwater
characteristics under the planta The recommended locations
and depths are anticipated to yield water samples that are
representative of water moving onto the site and off of the
site including the effectiveness of the soils in the
percolation ponds in filter the wastewater. Prior to
constructing the monitoring wells, however, we recommended
that the' City submit the report to the RWQCB for review
Particularly as regards to our recommended locations for them.
