Mr. Michael Infurna
December 1 fi, 1991
02320 1837 Page 2
TASK 2: ADDITIONAL EXCAVATION
In order to obtain approval for closure of the former tank pit, Groundwater Technology
proposes to overexcavate and collect clean samples from the waste oil tank pit
approximately 3 feet in each direction (Figure 2). The original dimensions of the
excavation are 5.5'X11'X10' (Figure 2). The new dimensions will be approximately
8.5'X14'X13'. This excavation will be performed utilizing a excavator with a 40-Hour
OSHA trained operator. The excavation is estimated to take approximately one day. All
site safety and security protocol will be in accordance with Cal-OSHA standards, as
referenced in the site safety plan.
TASK 3: SOIL SAMPLING
Upon completion of the excavation, five soil samples will be taken as specified in the
California Regional Water Quality Control Board LUFT Manual and determined by the site
representative, from the bucket of the excavator (Figure 3). Four samples will be taken
from the bottom of the excavation at the midpoint of each wall, and one from the center
of the bottom of the excavation. The soil samples will be screened for volatile
compounds utilizing a photoionization detector. The soil samples will be described (using
the Unified Soil Classification System) by a Groundwater Technology field geologist,
working under the supervision of a California Registered Geologist. The sample will be
sealed with aluminum foil, capped, taped, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated
container.
TASK 4: LABORATORY ANALYSES
Groundwater Technology will submit the previously described soil samples to be analyzed
by a State-certified laboratory for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes
(BTEX), total petroleum hydrocarbons-as-gasoline (TPH-G) by EPA-approved Methods
5030/8020/8015, and Metals (Ba, V, Cu, Ni) using the STLC extraction method. If the
levels exceed the state mandated action levels then the California Waste Extraction Test
is to be performed for those species above the STLC limit.
TASK 5: SOIL STORAGE & DISPOSAL
All soil generated during the site activities will be stored on site. Approximately, 139 cubic
yards are currently stockpiled at the site pending characterization and disposal at an
approved facility to be determined upon characterization of the final stockpile. The final
. stockpile amount is estimated to be approximately 300 cubic yards. Storage of the
current stockpiled soil on site was witnessed and approved by Charlie Hunt of the San
LjkiGROUNDWATER
T,11 TECHNOLOGY,INC.
