UNITED PARCEL SERVICE <br /> Site Safety Plan <br /> October 7, 1991 <br /> ♦ Surface and Equipment contamination: <br /> contact with contaminated surfaces, or surfaces suspected of <br /> being contaminated should be avoided. This includes walking <br /> through, kneeling or placing equipment in puddles, mud, <br /> discolored surfaces, or on drums and other containers. <br /> Eating, smoking, drinking and/or the application of <br /> cosmetics is prohibited on this site in the immediate work <br /> area. This reduces the likelihood of contamination by <br /> ingestion. <br /> 4 Exposure - Heat Stress: <br /> Since climatic changes- cannot be avoided work schedules will <br /> be adjusted to provide time intervals for intake of juices, <br /> juice products and water in an area free from contamination <br /> and in quantity appropriate for fluid replacement. <br /> Heat stress may occur even in moderate temperature areas and <br /> may present any or all of the following: <br /> A. Heat Rash: result of continuous exposure to heat, <br /> humid air, and chafing clothes. Heat rash is <br /> uncomfortable and decreases the ability to tolerate <br /> heat. <br /> B. Heat Cramps: result of the inadequate replacement of <br /> body electrolytes lost through perspiration. Signs <br /> include severe spasms and pain in the extremities and <br /> abdomen. <br /> C. Heat Exhaustion: result of increase stress on the <br /> vital organs of the body in the effort to meet the <br /> body's cooling demands. Signs include shallow <br /> breathing; pale, cool, moist skin; profuse sweating; <br /> dizziness. <br /> D. Heat Stroke: result of overworked cooling system. <br /> Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat stress. <br /> Body surfaces must be cooled and medical help must be <br /> obtained immediately to prevent severe injury and/or <br /> death. Signs include red, hot, dry skin; absence of <br /> perspiration; nausea; dizziness and confusion; <br /> strong, rapid pulse. Can lead to coma and death. <br /> 40 <br /> 8 <br />
