1/
Report of Results
Investigation of Agricultural Chemicals in Soil
PureGroBrea Facility
1905 North Broadway Ave-,Stockton,CA
Sierra-Pacific Project No.94-055.08
5.2 Total Kieldahl Nitr gen Result
Total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) was found in all samples collected during this investigation, at
concentrations that ranged from 48 mg/kg to 2,300 mg/kg. The highest concentrations of TKN were
found in samples from the west end of the current wash rack area (NSB-5). TKN is persistent
throughout the area investigated, and concentrations do not appear to attenuate with depth. This is
illustrated by the finding that concentrations of TKN ranged from 59 mg/kg to 190 mg/kg in the eight
samples collected in this investigation from the 50-foot depth. Since little or no organic material was
observed and no organic odors were noted during excavation and logging of the borings, these TKN
concentrations are thought to be primarily derived from aqua ammonia and other ammoniacal
compounds. Previous laboratory testing has demonstrated to TKN detected in soil and ground water at
this site is almost entirely ammoniacal nitrogen(NH4).
5.3 Halogenated Volatile Organic CompQund Results
Soil samples collected from the four borings around the old tank farm area(NSB-1 through NSB-4)
were analyzed for halogenated volatile organic compounds(HVOCs). No HVOCs were detected in any
of the samples at or above the laboratory detection limits.
5.4 Physical Properties of Sails
Three soil samples, representing the range of soil types encountered during this investigation, were
submitted to Unocal's contract laboratory, PTS Laboratories, Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, California, for
physical testing. Detailed results of these tests are presented in Appendix C, in both graphic and tabular
format. All three soil samples tested by PTS Laboratories were found to be sandy silts, with native state
water conductivity values ranging from 1.17 x 101 to 3.10 x 10'centimeters per second. Soil pH values
ranged from 6.67 to 7.36, and moisture contents ranged from 15.9 to 30.7 percent by weight. A total
organic carbon value of 380 mg/kg was found in sample NSB-2-20. The other two samples had total
organic carbon values less than 100 mg/kg. Bulk densities for the three samples ranged from 1.27 to
1.63 grams per cubic centimeter(79.1 to 101.5 pounds per cubic foot). Effective porosities ranged from
i
39.6 to 52.8 percent by volume.
i
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 12
