A summary prepared by Helmick & Lerner of
the analytical results is attached your information. The results associated with tank #1 (sample 39),
piping sample #5 (sample 45), and tank #2 (sample 34) indicate that additional soil investigation is
required. Seasonal high depth to groundwater near the site is reportedly 20 feet below grade (San
Joaquin County Flood Control Map 1986); therefore, a groundwater investigation is also required.
In order to evaluate the necessity to remediate soil and/or groundwater contamination, the vertical
and horizontal extent of the contamination must be determined and any potential threat which the
soil contamination may pose to groundwater evaluated.
PHS/EHD understands the budgetary problems that school districts face and has worked
successfully with Manteca Unified School District to investigate and remediate soil and groundwater
contamination associated with the operation of underground storage tanks. It is PHS/EHD's intent
that investigations proceed in a cost effective manner so as not to present an onerous financial
burden. PHS/EHD has also included an application for the Underground Storage Tank Clean-up
Fund.
Please submit by August 15, 1996 a work plan to investigate the soil and groundwater in the areas
that contamination has been evidenced. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to
contact me at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, Director, REHS
Environmental Health Division
..f
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Margare agario, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Lead Senior
Enc.
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Soad
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
