Stagg High School Site Code. 1027
1621 Brookside Road
Stockton CA 95207
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has
completed review of the "Preliminary Site Assessment Proposed Work Plan" dated July 9, 1997
and prepared by Helmick and Lerner. PHSIEHD has the following comments for your
consideration and response.
The work plan proposed the advancement of nine soil borings in the Diesel Tank#1 area, the
Diesel Tank Remote Fill Line area, and the Gasoline Tank#2 area.
Please note that the work plan indicated that the advancement of the soil boring proposed
adjacent to the former tank#1 would be terminated at 35 feet or when groundwater was
encountered which ever was encountered first. The groundwater level in the area of the site
has undergone significant changes in depth within the last two years and has been most
recently observed at 18 feet below ground surface (bgs). Given the discovery date, December
1990, soil samples will be required below the current groundwater level, to characterize the
vertical distribution of the contamination.
The work plan proposed to investigate the diesel fill line area with three soil borings placed
within 10 feet of sample #45 that was collected at the time of tank removal. The boring closest
to sample #45's location is proposed to be advanced to a maximum depth of 10 feet. PHSIEHD
recommends that the boring's depth be based on field screening data, so that the full vertical
extent of the contamination evidenced may be determined. Also additional borings may be
necessary to determine the lateral extent of the contamination, since the original piping samples
were collected every 20 feet.
It must be noted that analysis for ethylene dibromide should be included for samples associated
with the former gasoline tank #2, since it was detected in the sample that was collected at the
time of tank#2 removal.
Once field activities are completed and prior to submittal of the soil samples to the laboratory,
PHSIEHD must be contacted to discuss which samples will undergo analysis. The summary
report should include a table with all soil and groundwater sample results obtained from the site
and any recommendations for further investigation andior remediation.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
