' GEOMATRIX
' 3.3 HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES
Based on the results of the human health risk evaluations described above, the presence of
' residual petroleum constituents detected in the soil and groundwater at the site does not pose an
unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, under the conditions evaluated. Con-
struction workers or others who encounter and handle oil-affected soil do not require any
specific health and safety training above standard requirements for performing their job. The
oil-affected soil may have a petroleum odor that dissipates over time. If workers voluntarily
' choose to use air purifying respirators rather than dust masks to avoid these nuisance odors,
workers must be trained, and fit-tested, and must generally comply with California OSHA,
CCR Title 8 Section 5144 and federal OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.134.
3.4 PROPOSITION 65 EVALUATION
' Chemicals identified under California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of
1986 (Proposition 65)known to cause cancer and/or reproductive toxicity have been identified
' in soil at the site. However, based on the results of the human health risk evaluations, the soil
conditions within the project area pose no significant risk as defined by Proposition 65 under
' foreseeable potential exposure situations (for example, construction activities, commercial/
residential land use).
' It is recommended, however, that contractors provide their own evaluation of the need for
Proposition 65 notification associated with other activities under their control. For example,
field activities that include work within excavations or confined space areas could lead to
higher short-term exposures. Such work areas may also involve exposure issues beyond the
' scope of previously conducted health risk assessments, for example, equipment diesel exhaust
or background levels of lead in soil.
' 4.0 CONTACTS
Additional information regarding the oil-affected soil and its reuse/disposal can be obtained by
calling any of the parties listed below.
' Chevron Environmental Management Company Mr. M. Scott Mansholt (925) 842-1804
Geomatrix Consultants, h3c. Mr. Martin Bloes (510) 663-4100
' San Joaquin County Environmental Health Dept.
