Underground Storage Tank Delineation Sampling Using Cone Penetration Testing
With An Ultra-Violet Optical Screening Tool Report
216 N.California Street
To address the lateral extent of contamination, two additional CPT borings, CPT2 and CPT3, were
advanced 25 feet and 40 feet, respectively, from CPT I. These additional soil borings were advanced to a
depth of 100 feet bgs. A groundwater sample was collected from CPT2-2 at a depth of 41 feet using the
procedure described for CPT1. Two soil samples were collected from CPT2-3 at depths of 35 and 60 feet
bgs (Figures 2 and 3, Appendix A). A California Professional Geologist performed the borehole geologic
_ logging based upon CPT data including the ratio of tip and sleeve pressures, and visual identification of
soil samples (Figure 4, Appendix A and Boring Logs, Appendix C).
3.1 LABORATORY ANALYSES
The samples were shipped to Argon Laboratories Inc., a California-certified laboratory (DHS# 2359) in
Ceres, California for analysis. The six soil samples and three groundwater samples were analyzed for
benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8021B; and total petroleum
hydrocarbons quantified as diesel (TPH-D) by EPA Method 8015M. Benzene and toluene were not
detected at or above the laboratory reporting limits in any of the samples. Ethyl benzene and total xylenes
_ were detected in some of the samples at relatively low concentrations. Diesel-range petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH-D) were detected in most of the samples at low to moderate concentrations.
Laboratory analytical results are summarized in Table 1, below, and certificates of analysis and the
chain-of-custody record are included in Appendix B.
Table 1
Laboratory Analytical Results
Constituent
Sample H) Date Soil: Units=mg/kg
Sampled TPH-D B T E X
CPT1-60 11/12/2008 3,500 <0.25 <0.25 <0.25 5.4
CPTI-72 11/12/2008 230 <0.050 <0.050 0.073 0.45
CPT1-80 11/12/2008 11 <0.010 <0.010 <0.010 <0.020
CPT1-100 11/12/2008 7.9 <0.010 <0.010 <0.010 <0.020
CPT2-35 11/13/2008 41600 <0.25 <0.25 <0.25 3.
CPT2-60 1 11/13/2008 <5.0 <0.005 <0.005 <0.005 <0.010
Groundwater: Units=
CRWQCB water quality goals 56 0.15 150 300 1750
CPT 1-61 11/12/2008 3 600 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 1.9
CPT1-75 11/12/2008 <50 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 <1.0
CPT2-41 11/13/2008 5,800 <0.5 <0.5 3.3 14
CRWQCB=California Regional Water Quality Control Board
Bold=indicates an analytical result exceeding CRWQCB water quality goal
Units: mg/kg:milligrams per kilogram,parts per million(ppm);µg/L:micrograms per liter,parts per billion(ppb)
B,T,E,X=benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, total xylenes;TPH-D=total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as diesel
Analytical methods used:EPA Methods 8015M(TPH-D);8021B(BTEX).
1 CONDOR
