Page I of 2
Mike Infurna [EH]
From: Mike Vlach [mviach@surewest.net]
Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 3:59 PM
To: Mike Infurna [EH]
Subject: Re: Oliveras prop
Mike- Castle labs has said similar things about MTBE breaking down in to TBA from heat in certain brands of test
equipment, but nothing about acid. I will talk to Clarie. TBA is what is breaking through first on the carbon filters.
I am testing a new set up with this fourth set of filters. TBA is an alcohol, you make alcohol in an oxygen deprived
environment. I am running my 1/4" bleed water ports wide open and sprinkling the water into the recycle barrel in
an attempt to introduce oxygen into the filters. Typically the first filter will break through with TBA after two
weeks. I have to wait to get the fourth week of data for this forth set of filters, it has been clean for the first three
weeks. The lower concentrations at EW-1 can also be why the run time is encouraging.
-Mike Vlach
----- Original Message
From: Mike Infurna [EH]
To: Mike'Vlach
Sent: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 2:16 PM
Subject: Oliveras prop
Mike,
I got a chance to look at the lastest QMR on Geotracker for this site, 300 S.
California.
I'm concerned with the TBA and it's 'spotted' history at this site.
I've read some literature that suggests sites with MtBE have been showing TBA
in the gw samples from 'hydrolosis' in the VOA. sort of a 'lab induced' error, but
this one occurs IN the VOA.....
the paper suggest the presence of MtBE in a strong acid (1 .0 to 2.0 pH)
transforms to TBA inside the VOA...
as a check, they recommend either NO preservative or TSP in another sample run
as a blank or even a dup.
high percentages of non-HCI preserved samples were negative for TBA on sites
with MtBE ...
just a thought.
Michael J. Infurna Jr.
Senior RENS. CA Reg#5649
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV
San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Department(SJCEHD)
600 E. Main Street
9/16/2008
