C LEARWAT
EF
G R 'O U P, I N C. ;
2.0.FIELD ACTIVITIES
2,1 Soil Borehole Drilling and'Soil Sampling
I
Allwork was performed according to, Clearwater's Well Installation and
_  _
Groundwater Sampling Protocols (Appendix A) and under the';`directives and.
guidelines established by the PHS/EHD and-the Regional Water Quality Control
,Board._ _Soil borehole drilling and well" installation •was conducted by. Mitchell
Drilling' Environmental (MDE) of Rancho Cordova, California under the .
supervision of Clearwater on March 31, -1995.' Prior to commencement 'of•drilling
'activities, safety briefings were held with,,personnel of MDE. At the end-,of the
briefing, 'all personnel reviewed and signed the Site Safety Plan (Appendix B).
MDE used"a CME 75 drill rig.-to- drill.•three' eight-inch diameter soil" borings;
designated MW-1 through MW-3,; to total depths of t 60 feet below ground surface''fts). A CA-rnodified split-spoon sampler lined with three two-inch diameter brass
tubes was used to collect soil samples ,at five-foot intervals from the soil borings.
As proposed in the project workplan; four samples from each boring were retained,
for laboratory analysis. The samples were collected from intervals•showing the
highest concentrations of volatile vapors, as measured• using a Microtip MP1000'
'Organic Vapor Meter (OVM . All samples for analysis were labeled, documented on
a chain-of-custody form, and placed in. a 'cooler for transport to Trace Analysis .
Laboratory, Inc. (TAL), a DHS-certified analytical laboratory located in Hayward,
California. The soil samples were analyzed. for concentrations of total gasoline-
range' hydrocarbons '(TPHg) and total diesel-range hydrocarbons (TPHd)' by EPA
Method 8015 (LUFT modified) and for benzene, toltiene, ethylbenzene and xylene
• isomers (BTEX)",-by.EPA Method 8020 (LUFT modified).
Portions•of each soil sample were retained for visual sedirnentologic description by'a
=Clearwater- geologist using the.Unified Soil Classification System, and for.volatile
organic headspace analysis'using an OVM. °OVM readings are presented onthe Soil
Boring Log and Well•Constnzction Diagrams in'Appendix C. Soil cuttings generated
- ,from "drill'ing,were added .to- the existing:tank excavation 'soil piles pending future
removal. :f
D-105 PSA, 2 V .May 25, 1995
