File No. 3359-44
23 January 1995 Page 1
BACKGROUND
According to information provided verbally by City of Ripon personnel, a 500-gallon-capacity
underground gasoline storage tank and pump were removed from the city's corporation yard on
California Street. The tank had contained supreme leaded gasoline. The site location is shown on
Figures 1 and 2. The tank removal occurred approximately 15 years ago. Figure 3 includes the former
location of the underground fuel storage tank and associated pump.
No soil samples were collected from the tank excavation because it was not the standard of practice
to do so at that time or required by law. The objective of the proposed soil investigation is to collect
and analyze soil samples from the areas that would represent the tank location.
DRILL SOIL BORINGS
Two soil borings will be drilled. One in the former underground fuel storage tank location and one
in the former pump location. The borings will be drilled using a hand auger. The boring depth will
be to 10 feet. This depth should be below the bottom of the tank excavation since the tank diameter
most likely was approximately 4 feet. (According to a representative of the City of Ripon, the tank
was buried approximately 3 feet below the ground surface.) The boring at the former pump location
will be drilled to 4 feet which should be below the base of the pump piping.
One soil sample will be collected from the bottom of each bore hole. Additional samples may be
collected if evidence of petroleum contamination is detected at shallower depths. Soil samples will
be collected using a drive sampler equipped with brass sampling tubes. After removing the tubes from
the drive sampler, the ends will be covered with Teflon tape and plastic end caps. Samples will be
placed in an ice chest and transported with appropriate chain-of-custody documents to WEST
Laboratory for analysis. The borings will be sealed with a cement slurry following sample collection.
To avoid potential cross contamination, the hand auger and drive sampler will be decontaminated
between sampling intervals and borings. Decontamination will be performed by washing with a
trisodium phosphate solution and rinsing with distilled water.
ANALYZE SAMPLES
The soil samples will be analyzed for the following parameters using the respective analytical method:
Parameter Method
Gasoline EPA method 8015 (modified)
- Benzene EPA method 8020
Toluene EPA method 8020
Ethylbenzene EPA method 8020
d Xylenes EPA method 8020
Lead EPA method 6010
'REPARE REPORT
After we complete the field work and obtain the analytical results we will prepare a report. This report
will document field and laboratory procedures, results, conclusions, and our recommendations for
additional investigative work or remediation,if warranted.
ANDERSON CONSULTING GROUP '
