i
30 January 2014
AGE Project No. 99-0682
historical groundwater monitoring results and results from samples collected during
post-ISCO injection monitoring , it appears that ISCO injections effected
downgradient dissolved hydrocarbon impact in the area of MW- 10 (Appendix E ) .
• Based on the ISCO pilot study field observations and monitoring data , the
application of the hydrogen peroxide solution and modified Fenton reagent solution
(diluted hydrogen peroxide solution with acid) in injection wells at the site was
effective at either decreasing dissolved hydrocarbon concentrations (MW- 1 A, MW-7
and MW- 10) or liberating residual drowned adsorbed hydrocarbons in soil (MW-8) .
Furthermore , based on decreasing hydrocarbon levels in observation wells MW-7
and MW- 10 , it appears groundwater in the downgradient area of the injection wells
was also effected by the ISCO media application .
11 . 0. DROWNED SOIL AND GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION ALTERNATIVES
Based on groundwater conditions , the lateral and vertical extent of groundwater impact and
the nature of the contaminants, AGE has evaluated three remedial technologies which
apply to treating contaminated "drowd " soil and groundwater ttheStallworthAutoSales
site . The thre technologies includelroundwater extraction`,igh vacuum (dual phase)
extraction and in-situ chemical oxidation . Additionally, monitored natural attenuation (MNA)
is evaluated .
11 . 1 . GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION
There are several different methods for treatment of extracted groundwater, which are
collectively called 'pump and treat' . As the name indicates, all methods involve extraction
and transfer of contaminated groundwater from the aquifer to an above-ground treatment
or disposal/recycling facility. The extraction is performed utilizing an automatic pump
system to maintain capture characteristics in the aquifer and to assure that process volume
requirements are maintained . After treatment, the water is usually discharged into a
sanitary sewer drain system .
11 . 1 . 1 . Groundwater Treatment Methods
The presence of dissolved hydrocarbons will require treatment for the recovered water.
Two of the most common methods of water treatment are air stripping and carbon
adsorption . Air stripping involves removal of volatile organic compounds from groundwater
by promoting the transfer of contaminants from the dissolved phase to the vapor phase .
The process usually works well with volatile organic compounds , but less successfully with
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
