The iasidvolume of the cylinder :s the sample
chamber. The top and thbottom caps hava valves that open and
C1030 in unison. The valv s are activated by a electric solenoid.
The operation of the AMS IDiscxete Liquid Sampler Is as follows.
The sampler is lowered tothedepth at which a samDle is desired
and the soleaold to activIted opening the top and bottom valves.
Fluid enters the sample chamber through the button valy& which
displaces any gas or air i side of the sample chamber. The gas or
air inside Of the samplechamber exits through the upper valve.
When the sample chamber is 1full the solenoid is deactivated and the
sampler is returned to tte surface. When the 2ampl.er has been
returned to the surface an emptying valve is attached to the lower
end Of the sampler and the liquid sample is transferred to u
$hipping or storage container.
The use of the dual valves *tem minimlzes the possibility that the
fluid being sampled will lie mixed with the gag or air inside the
sample chamber. $ince the gas or air is allowed to escape through
the upper valve nd the fluid enters through the bottom only the
upper aurface of the fluid inside of the sample chamber is exposed
tko the gas or air inside of the sample Chamber. The amount of ai.r
exposed liquid inside th chamber can be further reduced by
allowing the valves to re in open for a period of time after the
chamber is full of liquid. Durinq the tin® Interval that the
valves are open thv expOsel fluid will diffuse out of the chamber
through the upper valve because a velocity gratdiont has already
been initiated toward the Aper valve port.
In the accompanying figure ' (a) is the sampler in sampling position
with the valves closed, and in (b) the valves are oven and fluid
iS entering the chamber through the bottom valve While gas or air
0X1tS the chamber through the top port. In (c) the valves have
been closed and in (d) the ampler has been retrieved, the emptying
valve attached to the lower end and the fluid is being discharged.
1
I
i
i
f
i
f
i
