Accredited by <br /> U S Dept ofCommerce <br /> ASBESTOS TEM LABORATORIES, INC CA DOHS ELAP <br /> Apr/09/2002 <br /> V Miller <br /> McCampbell Analytical <br /> 110-2nd Ave,#D7 <br /> Pacheco,CA 94553 <br /> RE LABORATORY JOB # 299-159 <br /> Transmission electron microscopy analytical results for I water sample(s) <br /> Job Site <br /> .lob No 0204071 <br /> Enclosed please find results for the TEM analysis of one or more water samples The analytical procedures were performed <br /> according to a Modified EPA Method 60014-83 which,while similar in analytical technique,does not meet or fulfill the rigorous <br /> requirements of the EPA Drinking Water Standard for various reasons(i a hold time exceeded 48 hours,unrefrigerated shipping, <br /> analytical sensitivity>0 2 MFL due to particulate overloading,etc) <br /> Prior to analysts,samples are checked for damage,disruption of any chain-of-custody seals,and completeness of accompanying <br /> paperwork If no problems are found,samples are then logged-in,each given a unique laboratory number,and a hard copy <br /> containing all pertinent information is generated This,and all other relevant paper work are kept with each sample throughout the <br /> analytical procedures to assure proper analysis <br /> Preparation of water samples is performed within a HEPA filtered,Class 100 air,laminar flow clean bench environment Prior to <br /> filtration,water sample Writainers are ultrasonicated,and if necessary,treated with UV light while and ozone gas for three hours to <br /> kill and oxidize all organisms and organic materials contained in the water An aliquot of the water sample is pipetted into a special <br /> filtration apparatus where contained particulate is collected onto a 0 1 micron pore size polycarbonate(PC)or mixed cellulose ester <br /> (MCE)filter The filters are removed from the apparatus and dried A portion of each sample filter is sectioned,placed onto a glass <br /> microscope slide, and carbon coated The Filters are further sectioned and placed carbon side up onto 200-mesh copper TEM <br /> sample grids in a chloroform or dimethyl sulfoxidelacetone wick washer Sample gnds are placed into a condensation washer,or left <br /> in the wick washer,until all filter material is dissolved The TEM grids are removed and placed into labeled grid storage boxes <br /> TEM analysis is performed on a Philips EM-300 transmission electron microscope operating at 100 kV Initially,the grid is <br /> scanned at low and medium magnifications to insure proper sample loading,and coherence of the carbon support film Then TEM <br /> grid openings are analyzed at a magnification of 10,000X All fibers>10 um in length and exhibiting an aspect ratio>3 1 are <br /> analyzed Scanning continues until either 100 asbestiform fibers>10um in length are counted, 8 grid openings are analyzed, or an <br /> analytical sensitivity of 0 2 mullion fibers per titer(MFL)is achieved Analyzed fibers are subjected to detailed morphological and <br /> selected area diffraction(SAED)analysis Fibers indicated as asbestos,or potentially asbestos, are further analyzed by energy <br /> dispersive X-ray(EDX)analysis as needed The number of asbestos fibers detected,and other analytical parameters,are then used <br /> to calculate the concentration of asbestos in MFL The results are entered into a standard report format and reviewed by the analyst <br /> and the laboratory manager before release to the client <br /> PTOSTEM <br /> ge <br /> BORATORIES INC <br /> elate only to the samples tested and must not bereproduced,except in full,with the approval of the laboratory <br /> ot be used to claim product endorsement by NVL.AP or any other agency of the U S Government --- <br /> 1409 FIFTH STREET,SUITE C • BERKELEY,CA 94710 • (510)528-0108 • FAX(510)528-0109 <br /> With Offices in Reno, NV(775) 359-3377 and Las Vegas, NV(702)270-2463 <br />
