19 July 2000
. AGE-NC Project No 96-0232
is 4.0. CPT DRILLING: GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
On 28, 29, and 30 March, a first phase of work was performed Soil borings P13, P14, P15,P16, and
P 17 were advanced at the site utilizing cone penetrometer testing (CPT) technology to collect soil
characteristics data for the purpose of identifying possible migrational pathways of petroleum
hydrocarbons and other associated contaminants in the subsurface CPT data was then utilized for
construction of cross sections, Figures 21, 22, and 23, presented in the 19 June 2000 - Problem
Assessment Report, prepared by AGE Additionally, a cross-section illustrating the tentative
hydrologic zones, is presented in Figure 26, of this report
On 31 March and 03, 04 April 2000, a second phase of work was perfonned Soil boring twins P 13,
P14, P15, P16, and P17 were advanced at the site by revisiting the first phase CPT boring locations
Utilizing CPT technology ground water samples were collected from depth-discrete locations from
all five borings CPT logs are presented in Appendix C A site plan depicting boring locations is
presented in Figure 2
0 4 1 CPT DRILLING AND GROUND WATER COLLECTION PROCEDURES
A 25-ton truck-mounted CPT drill ng equipped with 2-inch diameter hollow-stem rods fitted with
a HydroPunch ground water sampling tool utilized a hydraulic ram to advance to specified depths
0 of each soil boring
Soil characteristics data collected from CPT borings P13 through P17 was utilized to construct
lithologic cross sections from which AGE defined five tentative hydrologic units The hydrologic
units are roughly defined as the intervals from 5 to 30 feet bsg(First Zone), 40 to 60 feet bsg(Second
Zone), 65 to 75 feet bsg (Rocky's Upper Zone), 95 to 105 feet bsg (Secondary Aquifer Zone), and
130 to 150 feet bsg (Primary Aquifer Zone) Specified zones are defined on basis of the CPT soil
characteristics data Tentative hydrologic zone boundaries may vary as much as 10 feet between
locations Due to AGE's limited data from the First Zone, Second Zone, and Rocky's Upper Zone
(shallowest screen interval in Rocky's Restaurant domestic well), the possibility that the upper three
zones may not be hydraulically distinct is not dismissed The data collected strongly suggests to AGE
that the Secondary Aquifer Zone and the Primary Aquifer Zone are separate hydrologic units
although the fine grained unit separating Rocky's Upper Zone and the Secondary Aquifer Zone thins
toward the west CPT boring logs and data sheets are presented in Section C Geologic cross sections
are presented in Figures 21, 22, and 23 of the 19 June 2000-Problem Assessment Report, prepared
by AGE Additionally, a cross-section illustrating the tentative hydrologic zones, is presented in
Figure 26, of this report
0 Second Zone, Rocky's Upper Zone, and Secondary Aquifer Zone were sampled and grab ground
• Advanced CeoEm ironmcntal Inc
