JUL 1116 1997ij
TRACY CA 95376
RE: HOTCHKISS MORTUARY SITE CODE: 1411
5 W HIGHLAND AVE
TRACY CA 95376
As a result of reviewing the preliminary site assessment workplan submitted by upgradient Environmental
Consultants dated July 24, 1997 and historical site specific data which confirms the existence of petroleum
products in the subsurface environment at the above referenced site, San Joaquin County Public Health
Services Environmental Health Division(PHS/EHD)provides the following comments and directives:
The soil sample taken beneath the tank at the time of removal was collected at a depth of nine feet below
grade. This investigation should define the lateral and vertical extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination, so it is required that soil samples be collected at a depth greater than ten feet below grade.
Per San Joaquin County Well Standards the work shall be performed by a C-57 licens'i ed contractor. If
water is above ten feet it will be required that soil samples be collected below the water, and not just until H
ground water is reached as was written in the work plan that Upgradient Environmental Consultants
submitted to this office.
The samples to be analyzed by the laboratory must be discussed with this office prior to their heir submittal to
the laboratory. If Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether(MTBE)contamination is found using EPA method 8020,
confirm the results using EPA method 8240 or 8260.
Should you have questions regarding this correspondence please contact Bruce Askanas at:(209)468-0331.
Donna Heran, REHS,Director.
Environmental Health Division
ago ,
Bruce Askanas,Sr. REHS Margare-4 rioupervisor
Site Mitigation Unit Site Mitigation Unit
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
