From September 29 through October 2. 1992, a representative
of our firm performed relativo compaction testing at the above referenced project on the
backfill of art approximately 20-foot by 00-foot excavation which had been Created by the
removal of hydrocarbon contaminated soil. At the time of our arrival the pit was about 12 feet
deep. For safety purpose$, compaction testing was not commenced until the fill had been ralsw
to the 7-foot depth. N Is our understandinta that the overall excavation depth may be on the
order of 25 to 30 feat. We were not present during the placement and compaction of the initial
backfill below, t2 fast and can not comment on its condition. During the backflii process, a pit 9
feet deep wag created for the excavator adjacent to the main pit. Tests were conducted at random
loeations in g=rdanCo with ASTM 02922-81 and ASTM D3017.68, Nuclear Density Test
Procedures. The backfill Consisted of native soft to within 2 feet of grade and import sand
above.
The maximum density and optimum moisture were determined In the laboratory in accordance
with ASTIi I Tast Method D1667-91. Lab results are shown in Table 1. The relative k=tlons of
the oompaction tests are presented and their results are summarized on the attached Table It. A
total of sixteen relative compaction tests were performed. Test results indicate that a minimum
of go percent relative compaction has been obtained within the areas tasted In the upper 7 feet.
This firm did not perform a Bolls investigation, did not conduct any tests to determine the
general condition, adequacy, remediation or stability of soils on the property, nor did it observe
the backfilling or compacting operations which were completed at the time our personnel were
called to the site. The only services performed were the specific moisture end density tests
summarized in this report. These test results provide only limited Information about the near
surface materials observed at the locations and depths tested and cannot be rellad upon for
information about deeper subsurface oondltlons or Compaction, or to determine the
$ppmpriateness of any design or construction of improvements on the site, No Inspection was
made of the contractor's work and no guarantee or warranty of that work in backfilling or
compaction of the Solis on the site is made or iMplied.
