TOXICOLOGICAL DATA ----ACUTE TOXICOLOGY--- ORAL TOXICITY (RATS) : LD50: > 7 g/kg Considered to be no more than Slightly toxic based on single dose level testing at 7 g/kg. DERMAL TOXICITY (RABBITS) : LD50: > 2 g/kg Considered to be no more than slightly toxic based on single aose level testing at 2 G/KG. INHAhhTION TOXICITY (RATS) : LC50 : 5000 PPM FOR 4 HRS. Practically nontoxic EYE IRRITATION (RABBITS) : Caused moderate irritation to rabbits. Eye irritation scores: 12. 0 at 24 hours , 18 . 0 at 48 hours, 18. 0 at 72 hours, 16. 0 at 4 days, 9 . 0 at 7 days. SKIN IRRITATION (RABBITS) : Moderately irritating to rabbits . - OTHER ACUTE TOXICITY -DATA: Inhalation of vapors/mists may cause _ respiratory system irritation. --GENETIC TOXICOLOGY (SUMMARY) --- ***Negative Ames Test. ***Mouse Lymphoma (L5178Y/TK+/-) Assay: Negative. ---NEUROTOXICOLOGY (SUMMARY) -- - ****Toluene Inhalation studies (1500 ppm) , 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for 6 months in rats: No neurotoxicity. --REPRODUCTIVE TOXICOLOGY (SUMMARY) -- - No birth defects were reported when pregnant rats, mice or rabbits were exposed to vapors at levels up to 1000 ppm of toluene. There were some toxic effects on developing fetuses in other studies -including decreased body weight and survival at 267 ppm or greater. A 2- generation reproduction study with rats did not result in birth defects at levels up to 2000 ppm, but there was some growth inhibition. The no-effect level (NOEL) for toluene was 500 ppm- --- TOXICOLOGY (SUMMARY) --- No carcinogenic effects were observed when toluene was applied to the skin of mice for two years. A 2 year NTP inhalation study at levels up to 1200 ppm toluene showed no carcinogenic effects in rats or mase. Prolonged or repeated exposure to toluene does not result in bone marrow injury of blood changes characteristic of benzene. Prolonged repeated skin contact with low viscosity materials may defat the skin resulting in possible irritation and dermatitis . ********************* XII .
