139 South Center Street, Stockton, California June 28, 1994
Chevron USA Products Company Page 3
3.0 ADDITIONAL ASSESSMENT WORK
3.1 Site-Specific Health and Safety Plan/Background Review/Permitting
Groundwater Technology revised the existing site-specific Health and Safety Plan required by the
Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Standard `Hazardous Waste Operations and
Emergency Response" guidelines (29 CFR 1910.120). The Health and Safety Plan was revised by
Groundwater Technology personnel following a complete review of site conditions. The document was
reviewed by all Groundwater Technology personnel and subcontractors prior to performing work at the
site.
Groundwater Technology conducted a technical review of all pertinent information prior to proceeding
with assessment work at the site. All applicable permits pertaining to drilling of the soil borings were
obtained from the SJCPHS-EHD (Appendix A).
3.2 Soil Borings
On May 12 and 13, 1994, Groundwater Technology supervised the drilling of four soil borings (SB-1
through SB-4) to approximately 45 feet BGS and one boring (SB-5) to 25 feet BGS. The borings were
drilled using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 8-inch outside-diameter (O.D.) hollow-stem augers.
All drilling equipment was steam cleaned prior to drilling each boring, and sampling equipment was
washed between sampling intervals. After drilling and sampling were completed, the soil borings were
backfilled to the surface with a portland cement/bentonite grout. The borings were backfilled under the
supervision of SJCPHS-EHD personnel.
All rinse water generated from steam cleaning was temporarily contained in Department of
Transportation (DOT)-approved 55-gallon drums pending transport to the Chevron refinery in Richmond,
California for recycling. The soil cuttings generated during drilling were placed on and covered with
plastic sheeting pending characterization. On June 8, 1994, the cuttings were removed by Integrated
Wastestream Management (IWM), a Chevron-approved and State-certified waste hauler, and.transported
to BFI landfill in Livermore, California.
_ .`y, GROUNDWATER
50395UM.RPT __ TECHNOLOGY
