ATTACHMENT C
Field and Laboratory Procedures
Soil samples for Laboratory analysis were not collected during this investigation
SOIL SAMPLING OF STOCKPILED SOIL
Soil samples were collected by filling four 2-inch diameter brass sample liners with a composite of soil from
each of the 55-gallon drums One composite sample was collected per approximately 100 cubic yards of soil
Soil samples were then labeled, and capped with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps The samples were then
sealed in zip-lock bags, placed on ice, and transported to the laboratory accompanied by the appropriate chain-
of-custody documentation
LABORATORY ANALYSIS FOR SOIL SAMPLES
Analyses for TPHg was performed by EPA Method 8015 Volatile organic compounds including benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX compounds) and fuel oxygenates were analyzed by EPA Method
8260B Analysis for lead was performed by EPA method 6010A
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The sampling procedure for each well consisted of first of measuring the water level and then checking for the
presence of separate-phase hydrocarbons(SPH), using either an electronic indicator and a clear Teflon®bailer
or an oil-water interface probe Wells not containing SPH that did not have submerged screens were then
sampled without purging Wells that had submerged screens were purged of approximately three casing
volumes of water(or to dryness)using a centrifugal pump, gas displacement pump, or bailer Equipment and
purging methods used for the current sampling event is noted on the attached field data sheets During purg-
ing, temperature,pH, and electrical conductivity were monitored in order to document that these parameters
were stable prior to collecting samples After purging, water levels were allowed to partially recover
Groundwater samples (purged and not purged) were collected using a Teflon bailer, placed into appropriate
EPA-approved containers, labeled, logged onto chain-of-custody documents, and transported on ice to a
California State-certified laboratory Field data sheets are presented as Attachment C
LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR GROUNDWATER SAMPLES
The groundwater samples were analyzed for the presence of TPH-g by EPA Method 8015 Volatile organic -
compounds including BTEX and fuel oxygenates were analyzed by EPA Method 8260B These analyses were
performed by utilizing a purge and trap extraction technique, with final detection was by gas chromatography
using flame- and photo-ionization detectors The methods of analysis for the groundwater samples are docu-
mented in the certified analytical report The certified analytical report and chain-of-custody documentation
are presented as Attachment D
•
