Date March 25,2004
• ATTACHMENT E
FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
Soil Sampling Procedures
Soil samples for laboratory analysis were not collected during this investigation Sampling equipment
used for collection of samples for lithologic characterization were thoroughly cleaned by washing in a
non-phosphate detergent solution and rinsing in clean water prior to collection of each sample New, pre-
cleaned brass sleeves were used for each sample collected
Soil Sampling from Drums
Soil samples are collected by advancing 2-inch-diameter brass sample liners into the soil drum, after
removing approximately 6 inches to 1 foot of surface material in the sample location One composite
sample is collected per approximately 100 cubic yards of soil Soil samples for chemical analysis are
retained in the brass liners, labeled, and capped with Teflon® sheets and plastic end caps The samples
are then sealed in zip-lock bags, placed on ice, and transported to the laboratory accompanied by the
appropriate chain-of-custody documentation
Laboratory Analysis of Soil Samples
Drummed waste soil samples are analyzed for GRO and BTEX by EPA Methods 8015/8021, lead
content is analyzed by EPA 6000/7000 Series Methods
Groundwater Sampling Procedures
Sampling equipment for groundwater sampling is thoroughly cleaned prior to each sample The
sampling procedure for each well includes measuring the water level and checking for the presence of
separate-phase hydrocarbons (SPH), using either an electronic indicator and a clear Teflon® bailer or an
oil-water interface probe Wells not containing SPH are purged of approximately three casing volumes
of water (or to dryness) using a submersible pump, centrifugal pump, gas displacement pump, or bailer
The equipment and purging methods used for the current sampling event are noted on the attached field
data sheets During purging, temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity are monitored in order to
document that these parameters are stable prior to collecting samples After purging, water levels are
allowed to partially recover Groundwater samples are collected using a clean disposable Teflone
bailer, placed into appropriate EPA-approved containers, labeled, logged onto chain-of-custody
documents, and transported on ice to a California state-certified laboratory
Groundwater Sampling Decontamination Procedures
Prior to sampling each well, reels and pumps are decontaminated with a steam cleaner Sensitive
equipment such as the water level sounder are sprayed with a non-phosphate soap and deionized water
solution and rinsed with deionized water All water used for equipment decontamination is collected and
contained in a truck-mounted water tank
K\Wprocessll5 BP ARCO\04493\Well install\4493 well installation repon04 doc Page E - 1
