Fish
Delta smelt(Hypomesus transpacrficus) '
HABITAT AND BIOLOGY, An euryhaline(tolerant of a wide salinity range)species that spawns
ii in freshwater dead-end sloughs and shallow edge-waters of channels of the Delta (59 Federal
Register 65256) Adult delta smelt are most abundant in shallow, low salinity water
! associated with the mixing zone, except during spawning (58 FR 12854) Adult smelt migrate '
upstream from the brackish water habitat of the mixing zone to spawn in freshwater areas,
beginning in December to July and August(59 FR 65256) After hatching, larvae are
transported downstream toward the mixing zone where they mature The location of the
j; mixing zone varies When the mixing zone is contained within Suisun Bay, young delta smelt
P are dispersed throughout a large expanse of shallow-water and marsh habitat However,
I; when the mixing zone is located upstream, it becomes confined in deep river channels that '
have smaller total surface area, fewer shoal areas, and swifter, more turbulent water currents
!, (59 FR 65256)
RANGE Historically, the Delta smelt occurred from Suisun Bay to the City of Sacramento on '
the Sacramento River and the City of Mossdale on the San Joaquin River(59 FR 65256)
Most spawning occurs in the western Delta, spawning has also been recorded in Montezuma
l and Suisun sloughs and their tributaries north of Suisun Bay, in the Sacramento River up to
Rio Vista, and in Barker, Lindsey, Cache, Georgiana, Prospect, Beaver and Hog and
Sycamore sloughs (Radtke 1966 and Wang 1986 in 58 FR 12854, and Wang, 1991 in 59 FR
65256)
CNDDBI RARE FIND RECORDS There are no records for this species in the Stockton West ,
quadrangle
I; HABITAT PRESENT ON-SITE? Marginal Delta smelt could occur periodically in Stockton
Channel adjacent to the project study area However, foraging habitat for this species is very
marginal in Stockton Channel due to the lack of shallow water and aquatic vegetation There
b is no spawning habitat in Stockton Channel due to the lack of shallow water habitat and
{{ aquatic vegetation See Section VII of this document for additional discussion
i,
1 Green sturgeon (Acrpenser medirostns)
? y HABITAT AND BIOLOGY- An anadromous species that moves up large rivers to spawn
1 (McGinnis, 1984) Spawning occurs in deep, fast water in the mainstream of rivers (Moyle et ,
al, 1995) Green sturgeon have a similar spawning and larval ecology to the White sturgeon
(Acrpenser transmontanous), but probably require colder, cleaner water for spawning (S
Doroshov, in Moyle et al, 1995) i ,
RANGE: Rivers from British Columbia to the Sacramento River in California In California,
i Green sturgeon are known to spawn in the Sacramento and!Klamath Rivers (Moyle et al,
1995)
? CNDDBI RAREFIND RECORDS There are no records for this species. in the Stockton West '
j, quadrangle
+' HABITAT PRESENT ON-SITE? Marginal Green sturgeon could periodically occur in Stockton
Channel adjacent to the project study area However, foraging habitat for this species is very '
marginal due to the lack of deep, fast flowing water There is no spawning habitat in Stockton
{ Channel adjacent to the project study area Spawning in recent years has been confirmed
SEA B104 DOC 9!18+97 Sycamore Environmental Consultants Inc
i 7
i
I
