i •
Measure Heart Rate (HR). The heart rate shall be measured by the radial pulse, for 30
seconds, as early as possible in the resting period. The HR at the beginning of the rest
period shall not exceed the established maximum rate. The maximum heart rates
measured immediately after a work cycle shall not exceed an individual's maximum-age-
adjusted heart rate [(0.7) (220-age)] and shall not exceed 150 percent of the resting heart
rate of 110 beats/minute. If the HR is higher, the next work period shall be shortened by 33
percent, while the length of the rest period stays the same. If the pulse rate still exceeds
110 beats/minute at the beginning of the next rest period, the following work cycle shall be
further shortened by 33 percent. The procedure is continued until the rate is maintained
below the established maximum.
Manage Work/Rest Schedule. The following work/rest schedule may be used as a
guideline:
Active Work Time (min/hr)
Adjusted Temperature Using Level B/C/D Protective Gear
Degrees (F) Without Cooling Provisions
B C D
85 or less 30 50 60
90 30 40 60
95 30 30 50
100 20 20 50
105 10 10 45
110 0 0 0
Calculate the adjusted temperature:
T (adjusted) = T (actual) + (13 x fraction sunshine)
Measure the air temperature with a standard thermometer.
Estimate fraction of sunshine by judging what percent the sun is out:
100% sunshine = no cloud cover = 1.0;
50% sunshine = 50% cloud cover = 0.5;
0% sunshine = full cloud cover = 0.0.
Workers who are required to wear protective clothing may be required to adjust work
activities according to the following work cycle schedule that is based on the adjusted
temperature (T adj = T actual + 13 x Fraction Sunshine). In addition, workers required to
utilize Level B SCBA equipment shall be reminded that the average maximum work time is
approximately 30 minutes based upon the compressed air volume within the SCBA, and
removal of this ensemble plus decontamination must be incorporated in the work time
when calculating work/rest schedules.
ENV~ 13 February 2005
A M E R 1 C A P:\PG&E\PGE-05-01 Stockton MW26R Investigation\MW26 Work Plan\H&S\H&S Plan-2005.doc
