w 0
7.0 DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES
7.1 Personnel Decontamination
Personnel decontamination is not expected to be necessary for most of the fieldwork. The
only exception is when Level C protection is used. In this case, decontamination
procedures will be performed on all personnel wearing Level C PPE when leaving the Site
working zone. The personnel decontamination procedures, if needed, are included in
Exhibit C.
7.2 Equipment Decontamination
Equipment that needs to be decontaminated may include hand augers, drill bits and
augers, backhoe, tools, monitoring equipment, sample containers, and the
decontamination equipment itself.
Equipment will be cleaned prior to entering the Site to remove any grease, oil, encrusted
dirt, or other materials. Whenever possible, gross contamination on equipment will be
removed in the exclusion zone prior to bringing equipment back to the contamination
reduction zone.
General equipment decontamination consists of dry brushing with a stiff-bristled brush
and/or a soap and water wash that will be followed by a potable water rinse. If soap and
water alone cannot remove contamination, additional procedures may be used such as
steam cleaning.
7.2.1 Hand Auger and Sampling Equipment
Hand auger and sampling equipment will be decontaminated before and between each use
to prevent cross contamination, as well as after sampling is completed, and when the
equipment leaves the exclusion zone. Sampling equipment may include trowels, shovels,
spoons, samplers and sleeves, and augers.
All hand augers and sampling equipment will be decontaminated using a non-phosphate
detergent and water wash, followed by two clean-water rinses. The sample tool is then
rinsed with deionized or distilled water and is air-dried.
Sample handling areas and equipment will be cleaned or wiped down daily. Disposable
wipes will be used and discarded into a plastic bag. These will subsequently be placed in
the disposal drum for final disposition. For final cleanup, all equipment will be
disassembled and decontaminated. Any equipment that cannot be satisfactorily
decontaminated will be disposed of (e.g., glassware, covers for surfaces) as previously
indicated.
ENV~ 19 February 2005
A M E R I C A P:\PG&E\PGE-05-01 Stockton MW26R Investigation\MW26 Work Plan\H&S\H&S Plan-2005.doc
