Pages 2-2 and 2-3, Sections 2.1.3 and 2.1.4, Geology and Hydrogeology
The FS should include the geologic and hydrogeologic cross-sections which provide a graphic
representation of the subsurface conditions. The cross-sections should include data from the
additional soil investigation conducted this past summer.
Response:
1. The Evaluation of Potential Groundwater Impacts from Residues in Soil report
(submitted to the agencies in March 1996) includes a conceptual diagram cross-
section through the vadose zone for Source Areas 1 and 2. The Phase IV Groundwater
Investigation report (submitted to the agencies on June 10, 1996) contains cross-
sections with groundwater Zones A, B, and C shown across PG&E Areas I and H.
These cross-sections also include some of the most recent drilling information.
Similar cross-sections may be included in the combined soil and groundwater FS.
Comment:
2. Page 2-13, Section 2.2.2, Former MGP Facilities
The second to the last sentence of the section describes former aboveground oil tanks. The
locations of these tanks are not shown on Figure 2-3.
Response:
2. Based on Sanborn maps and conversations that had taken place with PG&E
personnel during RI preparation, the abandoned 2-inch-diameter pipe and above-
ground oil tank (one is known about, not several) existed near the large transformer.
The pipe and tank were used during maintenance of equipment during electricity
generation that took place in Area II and they were not associated with the former
MGP. We will include a sentence in the FS that this tank and piping were not
associated with the former MGP.
Comment:
3. Page 3-3, Section 3.1.1, Phase I and II Investigations
Figure 3-1 shows the locations of soil samples and monitoring wells. Although background
soil samples are described in this section, their locations are not shown on any map in the FS.
Response:
3. Background samples were collected during the Phase I and II investigations and
are described in detail in Section 5 of the 71e Final Remedial Investigation and Risk
Assessment Report (submitted to the agencies on August 6, 1993). This description
and associated maps will now be included in the combined soil and groundwater
