Use of the adhesive beyond the working life is prohibited. <br />ORecommended for secondary containment installations due to size of kit. <br />14rNumber of bonds depend on ambient temperature. <br />JOINT ASSEMBLY <br />Bell and Spigot Joint <br />The Spigot Must Be Aligned and Looked in the Bell. <br />A cocked or misaligned joint will result in false lock up and <br />possible joint failure during testing or at a later date. <br />When the temperature is below 65`F (18.3`C), pre -warm <br />the bonding surfaces (after —� <br />the joint has been cleaned). <br />CAUTION: If a solvent is <br />used, evaporation may <br />be slow at extremely low <br />temperatures. Use a hol <br />air blower and apply heat <br />uniformly to the bell and spigot <br />until warm (not hot) to the <br />touch. Check temperatunI <br />by touching outside of tht <br />bell and inside of the spigot <br />to avoid contact with clean bonding surfaces. If hot to <br />the touch, let cool before applying adhesive. If an electric <br />heating collar is used to pre -warm, place the joint together <br />dry, then heat the O.D. of the bell to avoid contaminating <br />the spigot. <br />Brush adhesive on both surfaces, <br />applying a thin, uniform coating. <br />To minimize contamination, apply <br />adhesive to the bell first. Adhesive <br />should always be worked into the <br />machined surface by applying t <br />pressure during application. This will <br />"wet out" the machined surface and <br />maintain the required thin bond line. <br />Be sure that all machined surfaces <br />in the bell and on the spigot and cut <br />end of the pipe are uniformly covered. F -loess adhesive <br />will make the joint more diffioult to lookup and oan <br />result in a flow restriotion. <br />Connections into fittings are made using the normal bell and <br />spigot method. A threaded (r.A.B.) spigot can be bonded into <br />a smooth bell (fitting), or a smooth spigot can be bonded into <br />a threaded (T.A.B.) bell. <br />• Align and lock the joint. For 2" (50 <br />mm) fittings, insert spigot into the <br />bell until surfaces touch, then push <br />and turn at the same time until a lock <br />is achieved. Only a quarter tum to C <br />a half tum is usually needed. On 3" <br />and 4" (75 and 100 mrn) diameter <br />fittings, pushing and turning to lock <br />the joint is impractical. A driving force may be used. <br />If the adhesive or the pipe surfaces are <br />cool, push and hold for a few seconds <br />to allow time for the adhesive to start <br />flowing out of the tapered joint. If <br />additional force is needed, a rubber <br />mallet or a strong piece of wood and <br />hammer to drive the joint together is <br />the preferred method. <br />When the adhesive starts squeezing out of the joint, use <br />stronger blows. Proper pipe alignment is important. Maintain <br />back pressure against previously assembled joints to avoid <br />shaking them loose. After the joint has started to make up, hit <br />until no further engagement can be seen at the joint. When <br />engagement stops, the joint is locked. Always check previous <br />bonded joints to ensure they have not backed out. <br />Do riot use additional force on a spigot. <br />Check lock up by moving free end of pipe in an up-and- <br />down or side-to-side motion. The movement must be <br />sufficient to move the joint being checked. No movement <br />should be visible in the joint. If any movernent exists, the <br />joint is not locked up and the joint assembly procedure <br />must be repeated. <br />
