1 F � C ebi uan 14 1 997 Paye 2 portion of the site, and a service station building in the centi al portion of the site A hydraulic hoist was located in the southeastern portion of the site The station was remodeled in 1950 to include three new USTs in the northwestern portion of the site These tanks were of 2,600-gallon 4 000-gallon and 6 000-gallon capacities The existing product island %N as reconstructed in a location to t11e east of its original position A second product island was also constructed in the western portion of the site, parallel to Central Avenue The station building was enlarged to include an interior lube bay with a hydraulic hoist A waste oil storage tank was installed at the southeast corner of the service station building In 1956, the service station was remodeled again Two small product islands were installed in the northern portion of the site, in the approximate location of the product island from the 1950 remodeling The product island located along Central Avenue was removed In 1965, the service station was demolished The service station improvements in use at that time were removed during demolition The original fuel tanks, which were installed in the sidewalk to the north of the site, remained in place after demolition Previous Investigations . Irutial investigations at the subject site were performed for Wells Fargo by L M Swift and Associates (LMS) As documented in reports dated January 8, 1994 and March 29, 1994, I four exploratory borings were dnlled on the property Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in soil and groundwater samples collected by LMS In response to the findings of the LMS investigations, Unocal contracted Enviros, Inc and later PACIFIC to perform additional environmental investigations Prior to the current investigation, a total of thirteen exploratory borings, three groundwater monitoring wells, and three exploratory test pits had been installed at the site During the excavation of the exploratory test pits, two of the original underground fuel tanks in the sidewalk to the north of the site were encountered The cumulative findings of previous environmental investigations at the site were most recently summarized in a PACIFIC report dated November 22, 1995 FIELD ACTIVITIES The environmental activities documented below were performed in response to the identification of two of the original USTs, in the I I th Street sidewalk to the north of the former Unocal site The area of activities is shown on Figure 2 r � 3 i 00971 BaEPORT DOC
