Febi uary 6 1997 <br /> Page 5 <br /> Product Piping <br /> On December 11, 1996, two sets of underground product piping remained in place in the <br /> vicinity of the removed and abandoned USTs An isolated 1-112 inch diameter steel pipe <br /> was noted to the exit the area of the fuel tanks from the southeast corner of the fuel tank <br /> complex, trending toward the southeast The isolated southeast trending= pipe was <br /> excavated to its termination, approximately 15 feet fi oEn the UST excavation (Figure 2) <br /> A pair of 1-112 inch diameter steel pipes were noted to exit from the western edge of the <br /> UST excavation, trending west (Figure 2) Because this piping trended directly beneath a <br /> tree, the piping was abandoned in place by filling the pipes with Portland cement Prior to <br /> the abandonment of this piping, the length of the piping was measured by inserting a tape <br /> measure into the exposed ends of the two pipes The piping was determined to continue <br /> toward the west for approximately 10 feet prior to reaching an unidentified termination <br /> The requirement for soil sample collection from the locations of the removed and <br /> abandoned piping was waived by the SJCEHD <br /> GROUNDWATER MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION <br /> On December 7, 1996, one groundwater morutoring well, designated U-4, was installed <br /> between the locations of the two fuel tanks removed on November 26, 1996 (Figure 2) <br /> The location of this well was selected to allow the collection of soil and groundwater <br /> samples beneath the location of the removed USTs <br /> The boring for Well U-4 was dnlled to a depth of 21-1/2 feet bgs Groundwater was first <br /> encountered at a depth of 10 feet bgs on December 7, 1996 Well U-4 was constructed <br /> from 2-inch diameter schedule 40 PVC casing, installed to a depth of 20 feet bgs The well <br /> was completed with 0 020-inch factory-slotted screen placed between the depths of 5 feet <br /> and 20 feet bgs On December 23, 1996, the well head was surveyed by a California state <br /> licensed surveyor for northings eastings and elevations - <br /> Field and laboratory procedures which describe soil sampling, well construction, well <br /> development, and groundwater sampling procedures are presented as Attachment A The <br /> bonng log and well construction detail for Well U-4, well permit, field data sheets, and well <br /> survey data are presented as Attachment B <br /> Soil samples were collected at depths of S feet, 10 feet, 15 feet, and 20 feet bgs These soil <br /> samples were submitted to a state-certified analytical laboratory, and analyzed for the <br /> presence of total purgeable petroleum hydrocarbons calculated as gasoline (TPPH-g), <br /> benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX compounds), and total lead Soil <br /> i <br /> 1100971 WREPORT DTIC <br />
