SITE CLOSURE REPORT
LODI ACADEMY
... 1230 S. Central Avenue
Lodi,California
'r 1.0 INTRODUCTION
Two underground storage tanks were removed from Lodi Academy in August 1988. Soil samples
were collected at the time of the removal, and hydrocarbons in the gasoline and motor-oil ranges
were detected in the sample collected from beneath the waste oil tank. Contaminant concentrations
r exceeded allowable limits, preventing regulatory approval for site closure. At the request of Lodi
Academy, Upgradient Environmental Consultants.(Upgradient) has recently performed further
subsurface investigation to delineate the extent of any remaining contamination and to assess its
potential to,adversely impact groundwater.
2.011ACKCROUND
Lodi Academy is a Seventh Day Adventist high school located in Lodi. California(Figure 1). Until
1988,the school operated three underground storage tanks in the auto slop/maintenance yard
area. Two tacks stored gasoline, and the other stored used motor oil. The tanks were removed
under the supervision of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department in 1988, and
the excavations we're backfilled and covered with concrete.
It is our understanding that soil samples were collected and analyzed or petroleum hydrocarbons
at the time of the tank removals, and according to'information'provided by EHD, concentrations
of 7 ppm toluene, 77-ppm xylene, 780 ppm total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH-g), and 22,000
ppm oil and grease were detected in the soil sample from beneath the waste-oil tank. The sample
was not analyzed for the presence of hazardous.me'tals or halogenated hydrocarbons.
After the tank was removed, the excavation was backfilled and covered with concrete. No further
investigation was required or undertaken.
y
Following receipt of written communication from San.loaquin County E1ID in.February, 1994,
Lodi Academy elected to seek site closure by performing additional investigation of the reported
contamination. Upgradient was retained in July, 1994 to perform a subsurface investigation of the
extent of contamination.
