The Bottom Line and Conchnsion
SCS believes that bioremediation offers a cost effective technology for treating diesel- LL
contaminated soil This bioremediation project included the determination of the extent
of contamination, required sampling and analysis to characterize the contaminant, acus, _ .-
bioassay to determine the toxicity of the diesel-saturated soil, excavation of the soil, and
the bioremediation treatment and sampling The entire project, including constructions
of bids and report preparation, cost approximately $30,000.
The ultimate destruction of the contaminant in diesel-laden soil utilizing bioremediation
by indigenous microorganisms, when carred to completion, converts the diesel-
contaminated or hazardous organic Compounds into the innocuous substances, carbon
dioxide and water. In our opinion, bioremediation is a proven technique with enormous
- potent:al for the effective decontamination of sites with soil containing heavy hydrocarbon T
fuel, such as diesel. Bioremediation can result in a task done efficiently, safe'-
permanently, and done at extremely low costs. if, in fact, a larger lens had been
discovered in the above case, the cost per cubic yard of the remediation would have h
decreased precipitously.
3
The technique of bioremediation has a great deal of potential. In the future, the 4
application of bioremediation, using the many types of microorganisms which are being
developed, may be utilized for materials other than hydrocarbon-laden soils Although
there are possibly certain types of hydrocarbon-contaminated materials that may not be
as easily bioremediated, this process has proven to be an easy, efficient method for
treating contaminated soils that contain low volatile, easily degradable diesel and waste k
oils.
y
Y
rt
F[p
Y
1
i
i
t
I
