DEPARTMENT OF Cb
HEALTH SERVICES
776 P STREET, SACRAMENTO, CA, 95814 NEWO NLWS
`NUMBER: T 30-91 DATE. May 17, 1991
FOR RELr:ASE IMMEDIATE CONTACT: iiil singleton
(415) 540-3913
QTATZ GMS HORSE_ MAMRE CAN-_CLEAN8E_ nZARD0Rfi .WASU
SACRAMENTO -- State Health Director Kenneth W. Kizer, M.D. ,
M.P.H. , today released a study that demonstrates how horse manure
can be used to treat and recycle hazardous wastewaters generated
in the printing and paint industries.
r The treatment method, called biodegradation, uses
naturally-occurring microbes present in horse manure to break
down the hazardous constituents of water-based paints and inks.
By-products of the process are carbon dioxide and reusable water.
"This technology is both economical and effective at small
and large scale operations, " Kizer said. "It 's fortuitous that
we found such a simple and natural answer to an expensive and
W, complex environmental problem. "
Nationwide, an estimated 30 million gallons of water-based
ink wastes need treathesnt each year, as well as approximately
two million gallons of water-basted paint wastes. Research in
currently underway to expand usage of the technology to
peaticidea and herbicides
v IgRed by Wilills Fj_rM
- TPiisa waste digestion system, called- the Advanced BIO-GEST, T T
was developed two years ago by Advanced Manufacturing and
Development of Willits, California. Successful operation of the
Advanced BIG-GEST was demonstrated at the James River Corporation
flexible packaging plant in San Leandro through a grant awarded
by the Department of Health Services (DHS) .
The Advanced BIO-GEST is being used at a dozen industrial
locations, large and small, throughout California. The Advanced
BTO-GEST is exempt from regulation under the state Hazardous
Waste Control Law because it is an onsite treatment process that
generates and reuses demineralized water within the production
facility.
-anare-
