PHS/EHD has the following comments to be addressed prior to the initiation of
assessment field work-
The
orkThe stockpiled soil will be sampled for disposal characterization. The soil will then be transported to
either BFI or Forward for disposal.
Residual contamination associated with the former 350 gallon waste oil tank and the former 1,000 gallon
gasoline tank has been documented. Five soil borings are proposed to assess the lateral and vertical extent
of contamination associated with the gasoline tank Investigation of the contamination associated with the
waste oil tank will also be necessary.
Total lead concentrations of 83 ppm were detected during the 1988 removal of the gasoline tank.
Additional investigation of the lead contamination on this site will be required. Future soil samples
should undergo analysis for total lead by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 7420. If the
results of these samples indicate levels of greater than 13 ppm, they will require further analysis for soluble
lead by EPA method 7421, using deionized water as the extractant.
Please submit the following by October 5, 1992 for evaluation: a response to PHS/EHD comments, a
health and safety plan, a permit application, and a check for S89, which covers the application fee and a
site map locating all former tanks in relationship to the proposed investigation. Field work may begin
upon issuance of a PHS/EHD drilling permit.
If you have questions, please contact Mary Meays, REHS, at (209) 468-0337.
Jogi Khanna, M.D., M.P.H.
Health OM
urie A.
