vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID: Thermo Environmental
580A, 10. 0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene) . Readings were recorded
on the boring logs. The logs are included in Appendix C.
3.2 Well Completion
' The borings were completed as groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1
through MW-3) . Each well was completed using 0. 020 PVC screen from
57 to 77 feet. The filter pack (#3 sand) was installed from 55 to
77 feet. Bentonite chips were used from 53 to 55 feet and the well
was backfilled to the surface with Portland Cement. Each well was
developed prior to backfilling, using a surge block, and additional
sand was added when necessary.
3.3 Groundwater Surveying and Sampling
On 17 March 1993 , the water level in each well was measured
relative to the top of the casing. Casing elevations were surveyed
relative to the fire hydrant located on Channel Street, immediately
east of the site. The hydrant was assigned an arbitrary elevation
of 100 feet.
Water levels were measured using a Solonzst water level meter. The
relative piezometric levels and hydraulic gradient were determined
from these data (Table 1 and Figure 3) .
After water levels were measured, a 2" Grundfos Stainless Steel
Pump was used to purge approximately 6 gallons of water from each
well, to stabilize temperature, pH and conductivity (see Table 2) .
The purge water was placed in DOT-approved drums and stored on-
site.
Water samples were collected using disposal plastic bailers. The
water samples were placed in 40 ml EPA vials and transmitted to
WEST Laboratories for analysis.
I 3.3 Laboratory Analyses
The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
(TPH as gasoline) and volatile aromatics (BTE&X) in accordance with
EPA methods 8015 modified and 8020, respectively. Water samples
were analyzed for TPH as gasoline and BTE&X in accordance with the
DHS method for gasoline and EPA method 602 , respectively.
4. 0 FINDINGS
4.1 Stratigraphy
The pilot borings penetrated interbedded sandy silt, silty sand,
and clayey, silty, sand (Appendix C) . Colors vary from brown to
gray, with occasional white or orange mottling due to weathering.
3
