6.0 Conclusions and Recommendations
Historical fuel storage and handling operations on the property of the Transmission Shop site
' resulted in contamination of onsite soil and groundwater with petroleum hydrocarbons, primarily
TPH-g and BTEX. Past remedial actions included the operation of an SVE system that had
removed several thousands of pounds of hydrocarbons from the vadose zone. Subsequent soil
r and groundwater investigations indicated that the bulk of the residual hydrocarbon mass was
below the groundwater table, confined in the area around the UST formerly located on the east
' end of the property.
Several proven treatment technologies were identified as potentially applicable alternatives to
address the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination at the site. The selection of the technologies
was based on the nature and approximate extent of the onsite contamination as currently
determined. After further evaluation and comparison of the technical effectiveness,
implementability, and cost effectiveness of the alternatives, biosparging is considered the most
applicable and appropriate alternative to address the onsite hydrocarbon contamination in the
subsurface.
Further delineation of the extent of the hydrocarbon contamination will be conducted at the site
in the near future. Findings from the delineation activities will be reviewed and incorporated
into this FS as appropriate. Pending any new findings, it is recommended that biosparging be
selected the treatment alternative for the site.
FS_OnsitePetroleum Hydrocarbon Remediation.doc 6-1 Shaw Environmental, Inc.
