s
MEMO
4
PRG TANK REMOVAL SOIL ASSESSMENT
620 West Charier way,3toe§ton,CA
j Delta Project No.40-88-686
Page 8
r
j To evaluate the distribution of petroleum constituents in soiis and ground water, the installation of
monitoring wells at the site is proposed. A complete description of proposed monitoring well
h installation will be presented in a work plan which is currently being prepared.
E,y5.0 METHODSD PROCEDURES
f 5.1 Drilling and Soil S rn lln
Soil borings were drilled using a mobile B-80 drilling rig and 8-inch-diameter hollow-stem augers.
The soil borings were drilled to a maximum depth of 30 feet below ground surface.
i
0 Samples of subsurface soils were obtained using a California modified spilt-spoon sampler. Samples
I were collected and examined from each cf the four soil borings. All soil samples were collected in
glass jars and headspace gas measurements of total organic vapors were made with at.hNu PID. The
readings from the PID are recorded on the soil boring logs presented in App6'ldix A.
All drilling and sampling equipment was cleaned before drilling each boring using a high-pressure,
steam-cleaning apparatus. The split-spoon sampler was cleaned with phosphate-free soap and rinsed
with water following each sample collection.
i ?
5,2
:2
Soil Classification
E All soil samples were examined in the field by a geologist and described for color, grain size,
► moisture content, mineral content, and odor, and were classified in accordance with the Unified Soil
( , Classification System.
5.3 Analytic ll 5aMnle Selection and Preservation
f A soil sample from the bottom of each borehole was submitted to the laboratory for analysis. In
addition,a second sample from each of the soil borings surrounding the tank cluster was submitted
for analysis on the basis of the results of PID screening.
Groutin¢of$oil B ro_tnoc
All soil borings were grouted from the bottom of the borehole to ground surface on February 10,
`r 1989. Approximately 1 cubic foot of bentoniii)was emplaced at the bottom of each borehole prior
to grouting. The grout consisted of a cement/sand slurry.
