VO
26 May 1998
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0326
3.4. OVEREXCAVATION
On 24 March 1998,the UST excavation was enlarged for the installation of a new UST(section 3.5.,
below). Approximately 12 cubic yards of"clean" soil was removed from the northern end of the
excavation. Each scoop of"clean" soil was observed for the presence of hydrocarbon odor and
discoloration and was monitored with an organic vapor meter equipped with a photo-ionization
detector (PID: Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0eV, calibrated to isobutylene).
The excavation was extended to a depth of approximately 15 feet bsg and a length of approximately
45 feet. Due to space limitations at the site, soil excavated from the UST and piping installation was
transported by Lutrel Trucking to Forward,Inc. along with stockpiled impacted soil generated during
the UST removal. A total of 341.18 tons (approximately 260 cubic yards)of soil was transported for
disposal. Soil transport weigh tickets are included in Appendix C. Approximately 50 cubic yards of
clean soil was also transported off-site.
On 30 March 1998, six samples were collected from the stocl<piled soil, transported to AAL under
chain-of-custody, composited into two samples and analyzed for TPH-g and BTE&X in accordance
with EPA Methods 5030 and 8020, respectively. Sampling procedures were outlined in Section 3.2.
above.
3.5. UST INSTALLATION
On 26 March 1998, one 20,000-gallon UST was installed at the site. The new UST was installed at
— the location of the former USTs and excavation as described in Section 3.4. above. UST, piping and
dispenser installation was performed by Stokley Construction. In anticipation of additional
investigation at the site, two 12-inch diameter PVC conductor casings were installed during the UST
installation. The conductor casings were installed in the UST excavation tlu-ough the pea gravel and
covered with traffic-rated boxes. The site is currently in operation as a gasoline service station.
4.0. FINDINGS
4.1. UST REMOVAL
All three USTs appeared to be in fair condition upon removal with no holes observed. Obvious field
indications of hydrocarbon-impacted soil were observed in the soil immediately surrounding the
USTs and product piping.
Advanced Geo Environmental,Inc.
