own-R-411591
E
CALIFORNIA WATER LABS
1-7 QUALITY ASSURAMOLQUALITY CONTROL
MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
(Contlnusd)
i so that any procedure performed can be reconstructed from supporting documenta-
tion, with an accurate audit trail to their source. CIVL utilizes a process. -,the tracking
of all reagents, standards, and preparations. Information that Is documented for
reagents and"as-is standards`includes the code number.Item name,manufacturer,
lot number, concentration,by whom it was opened, and riie date emptied. Prepara-
tions and standards are documented with the code, date,p:.,eparation codes ofreagents
or standards used, volume prepared, preparer's name, standardization date, actual
concentration, restandardization or expiration date, and any comments pertaining to
the preparation.
^4
Equipment Maintenance
All equipment and instrumentation used in an analysis must be properly main-
tained and verified. Specific procedures for preventive maintenance are outlined for
all major analytical instrumentation. A laboratory logbook is kept with each
instrument, and all routine maintenance is recorded. Copies of work rendered under
service contracts are kept Ina elle. Balances are verified daily and before use with Class
P weights. The Class P working weights are verified against NBS Class S weights on
a monthly basis. Class S weights are sent for verification yearly. Analytical balances
are serviced and calibrated by a certified technician on a yearly basis unless there is
€ aroblem. A delivery check
p ry is performed monti-.ly on fixed-volume pipets. The
temperatures of all storage refrigerator/freezer;, incubators, ovens, furnaces, and
water baths are monitored daily. Working thermometers are verified against an NBS
thermometer every six months. Meters for pH and conductivity are calibrated daily
and before use. Conductivity on the de-ionized water is measured, and the systems
physically examined,on a daily basis.To prevent laboratory contamination,fume hood
r velocities are remeasured monthly. The autoclave is cleaned weekly, with the kilet
ampule test and cycle timing performed monthly. All other laboratoiy equipment is
maintained according to the manufacturers's specifications. Procedures for the
washing of laboratory glassware differ from lab to lab and are posted in the applicable
areas.
i
i.. ALL OF THE ABOVE PROCEDURES ARE DOCUMENTED IN THE APPROPRIATE
LOGBOOK OR ON A DATA SHEET AFFIXED TO THE EQUIPMENT.
-:,
QUALITY CONTROL.
Quality assurance consists of developing and Implementing a quality strategy for
lab operations. personnel procedures, and documentation. Quality control, on the
other hand,is the s eciflc tactic to ensure that
procedures p.ocedures foranalysis follow the desire
strategy. Unless a particular method requires more stringent procedures.CWL follows
these guidelines:
!.1
Method Blanks
' Method blanks are prepared and analyzed for every 20 samples cr one per batch,
whichever is most frequent. Samples associated with method blanks not meeting
"f laboratory standards must be reprepared and reanalyzed. Method blanks for volatile
organics are analyzed every twelve hours.
t:4 4
Y/J9
i
