• 0 <br /> Ethyl benzene can enter the body through all four routes of <br /> exposure: (1) inhalation; ( 2) absorption; (3) ingestion; and (4) <br /> injection. Target organs are the eyes, upper respiratory system, <br /> skin and central nervous system. Acute exposure effects include <br /> irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes, nose and respiratory <br /> system, as well as headache, nausea, staggered gait, headache, <br /> dermatitis narcosis and coma. The PEL for ethyl benzene is 100 <br /> Ppm. <br /> Xylene: <br /> Xylene is a colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is <br /> generally found as a mixture of three isomers: ortho--, meta -, and <br /> para-xylene. Xylene has a relatively low volatility (vapor <br /> pressure = 8 mm Hg @ 68F) and will likely be present in soils in <br /> both the liquid and vapor form. The flash point of xylene is 81 <br /> F classifying it as a flammable liquid. <br /> Xylene can enter the body through all four routes of exposure: <br /> (1) inhalation; (2) absorption; (3 ) ingestion; and (4) in)ection. <br /> Target organs are the central nervous system, eyes, <br /> gastrointestinal tract, blood, liver, kidneys, and skin. Acute <br /> exposure effects include dizziness, excitement, drowsiness, <br /> incoordination, abdominal pain, vomiting and irritation of the <br /> eyes nose and throat. The PEL for xylene is 100 ppm. <br /> PERSONNEL PROTECTION <br /> Personnel working around drilling activity will wear hard hats, <br /> work gloves, long-sleeved shirts and pants. <br /> All people not directly involved in the site investigation will <br /> be asked to leave. The site is a gas station serving the public, <br /> however, public will be required to stay away from the actual <br /> work. <br /> All inflammable materials will be stored in drums and sealed when <br /> not in use. Monitoring of the air will not be required at this <br /> site. <br /> DISPOSAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS <br /> Hazardous material which is required by the County Health <br /> Department to be containerized will be transported by a licensed <br /> Hazardous waste transporter to a the appropriate facility with a <br /> properly filled out chain of custody form. <br /> Page 10 <br />
