•
the equipment. The sediments consisted primarily of tan to buff
clay & sandy clay, with occassional interbeds of slightly sticky
tan to brown plastic clay, and infrequent lenses of "hardpan. "
There was no evidence of any contamination, and no odors were
noted. Two (2) soil samples were taken from the west wall by -
driving a clean metal tube into the teeth of the excavator
bucket. The soil samples were promptly sealed, labeled, and
placed on ice.
The excavator was relocated to the north side of the excavation &
began removing additional spoil from the area where the product
lines had entered the pat area. A noticeable petroleum odor, &
possible discoloration was observed in a lens of clayey sand at
the end of the trench. Backfilling of the excavation was dis-
continued at this point, pending further work.
Because of the inability of the excavator to reach all of the
contamination, it was relocated to the trench area, and ramped in
towards the pit from the north_ It appeared that the original
source of most of the contamination was from the pump island and
product lanes, rather than the tanks An irregular Tense of
clayey sand in the area where the trenched area opened into the
pit apparently acted like a sponge, and retained most of the
spilled gasoline. As that clayey sand was removed, the petroleum
odor decreased, and at about 25' bgl, all odors and visable
evidence of contamination disappeared. Spoil removal continued
to about 28' bgl, where a soil sample was taken by the geologist
from the excavator bucket by driving a clean metal tube into the
soil. The material consisted of soft clayey sand, with no
evidence of contamination. The sample was promptly sealed,
labeled and preserved on ice Approximately 100 cubic yards of
material was removed during this portion of the operation. PLATE
VII shows the final configuration of the excavation and the
locations of all samples taken.
The preserved samples were transported under chain of custody to
FGL laboratory with instructions to test for BTEX & TPH-G.
Results of that analysis is summarized on TABLE 7 , which revealed
that BTEX was below detection limits, and THP-G was measured at 1
mg/kg, which was the detection limit. That amount is far below
the maximum allowable level for leaving in place. The laboratory
sheets and chain of custody are attached as F. BIT I.
HI
During the above work, the removed spoil was being transported to
Forward, Inc. for disposal. After the last samples were taken,
the excavation was filled with clean soil back to it' s original
level A total of 750 cubic yards of spoil was removed from the
• proPerty; copies of the manifests for that material is included
7
