EXCAVATION AND ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES
Field sampling and data review were conducted under the supervision of a registered geologist
and engineer Soil samples were collected by an experience environmental geologist Samples
were collected and handled according to Kleinfelder's Field Protocol included in Appendix A
3 1 SOIL EXCAVATION SERVICES
Excavation services were provided by Lutrel Trucking Inc of Bakersfield, California Lutrel
was selected and retained by Independent Trucking Company Soil excavation was conducted on
August 21, 22 and 23 The area beneath the removed tanks was excavated to a depth of 3 5 feet
The middle section of the area was then further excavated to a depth of 9 5 feet, and the northern
Portion of the area was further excavated to a depth of 21 feet
Approximately 900 cubic yards of soil were additionally excavated from the aboveground
storage tank area during this time Groundwater was not encountered in the excavation at a depth
of 21 feet, however, nearby well sampling conducted in December 1995 indicated that water was
present 23 to 24 feet below the ground surface The locations of the removed tanks and
excavation areas are shown on Plate 2
3 2 ORGANIC VAPOR SCREENING AND CONFIRMATION SAMPLING
The excavation activities were observed by an experienced environmental geologist The
geologist classified the soil and collected soil samples for analysis To provide a qualitative
indication of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil and to monitor the vapor concentrations in the
breathing zone of the field crew, a portable organic vapor analyzer (OVA) equipped with a
photoionization detector (PID) was used to screen the samples in the field The OVA measures
total ionizable compounds in parts per million by volume (ppmv) relative to a calibration
standard
OVA readings in the excavation sidewalls (6 to 7 feet) ranged from 150 to 225pP my The
highest OVA readings were observed in the northwest portion of the excavation area, therefore
the excavation was extended to a depth of 21 feet in this area OVA readings were not observed
in the breathing zone
23-482276-BOO/CR96S276 Page 4 of 1 1 October 17, 1996
Copyright 1996 Kleinfelder,Inc
