The Report provided the January 2011 results of two soil
borings (SB-1 and SB-2) grab groundwater sampling and groundwater monitoring from all monitoring
wells (MW-1 through MW-4). Depth to groundwater varied from 8' to 9' below ground surface (bgs).
Groundwater flow direction was towards the southwest. SB-1 and SB-2 were completed to 25' bgs.
The grab groundwater sample results were non-detect for all constituents. Petroleum hydrocarbons
were not detected in the monitoring wells. Groundwater monitoring results are given in micrograms per
Liter in the table below:
Well 1,1-dicholoroethene cis-1,2- trans-1,2- trichloroethene
dichloroethene dichloroethene (TCE)
MW-1 1.8 710 61 <0.5
MW-2 2.8 1,100 130 0.76
MW-3 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5 <0.5
MW-4 <0.5 9.1 1.8 <0.5
The Report states that the above chlorinated solvents detected in the monitoring wells are the result of
activities at the wash rack (oil/water separator), and not due to the former underground storage tanks
(USTs) "...or are from an offsite source (i.e., the auto body shop).” However, the monitoring well
closest to the wash rack (MW-4) did not have the higher concentrations reported from the well nearest
the former waste oil UST (MW-1) and the well downgradient of the same UST (MW-2). I contacted
KRE on 17 March 2011, and was informed that the boring results did not indicate an offsite source.
Since MW-2 was recently found, had not been sampled since 2004, and has only been sampled once
in 2011, you will conduct another round of groundwater monitoring during the second quarter of 2011.
Upon receipt and my review of the monitoring report due 30 July 2011, further directives will be given.
If you have any questions, you can contact me at (916) 464-4615 or I can be reached by e-mail at
ibarton waterboards.ca.gov.
,James L.L.
