2. Spill Containment and Clean Up( <br /> a. Shut offelimmate all sources of ignition <br /> b. Attempt to prevent any additional release(if possible). An example wouldbe dosing a leahiug tape or mining <br /> off a pump that is causing a release- <br /> c. Caatain the spill by dilang around it using sand,earth m other absorbent material. Ensure special attention to <br /> prevemtimg spilled material from reaching a sewer or storm drain inlet. <br /> d. Absorb spilled material using sand,earth or other absorbent. Fhxx cleamnglswiteping materials are appropriate <br /> and are normally available. <br /> Nene: It may be possible to pump up a signiacam portion of contained liquid <br /> e. Avoid slim contact and breathing vapors. Near appropnaw protective dothrng and equipment. This equipment <br /> can include chemical resistant gloves,eye protection and supplied arrrvpimtors. <br /> f. Veentilate the area with local exhaust systema or by opening available doors and uwdows. <br /> Note: Avoid use of compressed air to speed evaporation of spilled liquid.This practice increases airbome <br /> concentrations and increases the possibility of injuries such as eye darnage. <br /> g. Dispose of containni ted absorbent in accordance with applicable regulations. This will normally,involve <br /> disposal of the material as a haamdous waste.If the material rs a cortmsrve,place comrsumated absorbent <br /> material rn polyethylene or polyethylene-lined comairter for disposal. <br /> Note: If the material released is a corrosive(i e.,battery acid),it may be possible to neulmdize l after it nus <br /> been contained. For Information on how to neutralize it,facility management should call the emergency, <br /> numbers provided on the product Safety Data Sheet_ <br /> 3. First Aid Procedures: First aid imfomationfor an individual chemical is availablean its Safety Data <br /> Sliest. It may also be appropti ive to consult a physician. General fust aid responses include: <br /> a. Eye Contact: Flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 nummea: Occasionally Tuft upper and lower <br /> lids. Consul a physician. <br /> b. SFin Contact: Remove comaniimwd clothing and immediately flush cmntamr and areas with huge amounts <br /> of water. <br /> c. Inhalation: If overcome or,affected by vapors,remove from exposure and call a physician- m"n ely. <br /> d, Ingestion: Call emergency medical aid immediately. Coostrlt the SINS to determine if vomutiug should be <br /> induced or if individual should be p evided other fust aid measures. <br /> 4. Evacuation: Supervisors have the amtfurmy to direct an evacuation of the facility-- Referto Part3 of this <br /> Action Plan. <br /> 5. Reporting: <br /> a. Obligation to Report: Depending upon,the volume invohed,the family may be requitedto report a relea <br /> or threatenedmlease of a hazardous material No report rs required for small,con-harmfiil releases such as a <br /> quart of dr=oil on the shop floor. <br /> b. Reporting Amhority: Any employee who detects a release or threatened release of a hazardous material <br /> (oiler than an rucidental spill)should immediately notify his orher supervisor,wbo shall then be responsible <br /> fmr assessing and be`?mot� a respome to the hazard posed. If the release threatenedrelease involves a <br /> sigurficam volume ofhazardous material,the supervisorshouldpromply ramify one of the following,who shall <br /> have reporting authority. <br /> Reporting _4uthoritc <br /> Branch Manager <br /> If none of tine patties can be notified,the supervisor has the authority Is,male the report. <br /> c. Reporting Procedure: If uncertain as to whedru a report is required,the responsible individual should fust <br /> query one of t:e below listed agencies.
