The tanks were removed by Precision Industries
(PI) of Stockton, California, between 6 and 10 July 1987. Weiss Associates
(WA) of Oakland, California, conducted several phases of subsurface
investigation and soil stockpile sampling between April 1987 and September
1988. The results of soil and groundwater sampling are presented in Tables
1 through 4 and sampling locations are presented in Figures 2 through 7.
– The following briefly describes the work performed: WA report dates and
recipients are underlined.
10 June 1987 - Julian Munoz Safeway
On 7 and 8 April 1987, WA supervised the drilling of soil borings and
collected soil samples around the underground storage tanks. The location
of borings B-1 through B-9 are indicated in Figure 2. In the area of the
tanks the site is underlain by low permeability silts and clays with
discontinuous layers of clayey sand. Groundwater was encountered at about
16 to 17.5 ft below grade. Photoionization detector (PID) readings during
drilling indicated that volatile hydrocarbons were present in soil in all
borings except B-1 and B-9. The highest concentration of volatile
hydrocarbons was detected at 700 ppmv in the sample collected at 19.7 ft
= from the bottom of boring B-8. One sample from each boring except B-9 was
analyzed by Brown and Caldwell Laboratories (B&C) of Emeryville,
California, for total fuel hydrocarbons (TFH) and benzene, toluene and
xylene (BTX) . Analytic results are presented in Table 1. TFH at 1100
ppm were only detected in the sample collected from boring B-2 at 20.7 ft
below grade. BTX were not detected in any samples.
---= 10 August 1987 - Julian Munoz Safeway
Between 6 and 10 June 1987, the four underground fuel storage tanks were
Water
removed by PI . WA personnel were present to observe the removal .
I
