Since Tank #3 indicated a confirmed fuel leak,
Safeway stores requested that P1 remove the four tanks and contracted WA to
determine the extent of fuel hydrocarbons in the Subsurface.
SUMMARY OF PHASE I - TANK REMOVAL AND SOIL BORING
PI removed the tanks between 6 July and 10 July 1987. Hydrocarbon
staining and odors were noted in the tank backfill. Analysis of a water
sample collected from the tank excavation indicated 1.1 parts per billion
(ppb) xylenes. Analysis: of two samples of the tank backfill material
remaining in the excavation indicated 130 parts per million (ppm) and 180 ppm
total fuel hydrocarbons (Tr'HC). Locations of the backfill samples are shown
on Figure 2. The disposition of the tank backfill material needs to be
determined for final tank excavation closure. Detailed results of the tank
excavation sampling and a proposal and cost estimate for treatment of the
backfill will be forwarded to you shortly,
Hydrocarbon vapors were detected in both unsaturated and saturated soil
during drilling of the soil borings, but laboratory analysis of soil samples
collected from the boreholes indicated that hydrocarbons were only present in
saturated soil from boring B-2, southwest of the tanks (Figure 2).
SCOPE OF WORK - PHASE :I
Since the results of Phase I indicated that hydrocarbons were present in
the subsurface, the San Joaquin Local Health District (SJLMD) requested
monitoring well installation to determine the extent of hydrocarbons in ground
water and unsaturated soil. Therefore, the scope of work for Phase 11
included;
o Drilling three borings, collecting soil samples at 5-ft intervals,
y g... er.--.--borin _and-installing three 4-in. diameter
anal zin one -sample -..P g __ _...... _. _... __,_..
ground water monitoring wells in the boreholes;
MEMOm..- ..wa.n..nmursnwr®raeesnsrwr
