u r
s
be taken from the pile at the end of the treatment period and analyzed
for TPH by EPA Method 8015 (Modified). If TPH is detected above
1 mg/kg in the samples, then the mixture will be left another 30 to 60
days and resampled. When TPH is no longer detectable above
1 mg/kg, the mixture can then be used by Safeway for on-site
landscaping or fill material.
HydroPunch Sample Collection
Four groundwater samples (HP-17, HP-18, HP-19, and HP-21) were
collected from the soil borings using a H
HydroPunch method allows the sampling of groundwater without
the necessity of well installation to help identify contaminants in the
gic well placement. The HydroPunch
groundwater and aid in strate
employs a probe made of two-inch steel pie equipped with a
detachable penetration cone. The probe was driven into the
'formation material in advance of the hollow stem augers. The probe
was then retracted from the detachable penetration cone to expose a
screen in the potential water-bearing zone. A water sample was then
collected with a Teflon bailer, which was introduced into the probe.
The water samples obtained with the Teflon bailer were immediately
transferred into the sampling containers. Care was taken to
minimize any agitation of the water samples.
All of the containers (VOA vials and 500-milliliter amber glass and 1-
liter amber glass) used were labeled with the well number, date,
time, sampler's initials, location, and analysis required. Each
1 sample was logged on chain-of-custody forms and in a field book.
Groundwater Sample Analyses
Groundwater samples were analyzed for TPH-D by EPA Method 8015
(Modified) and BTEX by EPA Method 602. Most samples were
analyzed by an on-site mobile laboratory from Sequoia Analytical.
Other samples were analyzed by Sequoia Analytical's laboratory in
Sacramento and by Anlab Analytical Laboratory in Sacramento.
Sequoia Analytical and Anlab are State-of-California-Certified
laboratories which maintain well-established and documented
quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programs. Both Anlab
and Sequoia strictly adhere to Section 10 ("Quality Control/Quality
Assurance") of "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste" (EPA
--- . .......... Manual 600/4-79-019, March 1979). Sections of these two documents
involving the QA/QC-aspects of sample collection,..preservation,-_an ._.... ---
_ sample handling are also followed by ERM-West.
23
