Mr. Kenneth Earnest
Ultramar Inc.
October 11, 1994
Page 2
Soil Sampli
After removal of the product lines and dispensers, one soil sample will be collected from native soil
beneath each 20 linear feet of piping, and one soil sample will be collected from beneath each of the
former product dispensers. Additional soil samples may be collected from overexcavated trenches
at the discretion of the Delta and San Joaquin County representatives at the site. Four soil samples
will be collected from each 50 cubic yards of stockpiled soil, with each set of four samples to be
composited in the laboratory prior to analysis. Soil samples will be collected in 2-inch diameter by
6-inch long brass tubes, which will be sealed with Teflon tape and plastic caps. The samples will
be stored in an ice chest cooled to 4°C for transport to the laboratory.
Soil samples will be submitted to a state-certified laboratory for analysis of benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, xylenes, and total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline. In addition, the two stockpile
composite samples with the highest concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons will be analyzed for
halogenated volatile organic compounds and the following metals: arsenic, barium, cadmium,
chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc. The halogenated volatile organic
compounds and metals are being analyzed for acceptance of excavated soils at the Bio Industries, Inc.
landfill. The samples will be analyzed using methods approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and the California Department of Health Services.
Remarks/Signatures
Delta recommends that a copy of this letter be forwarded to:
Mr. Harlin Knoll Mr. James B.
