The method has been modified to use polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and Rochelle Salt. PVA is
used as a disperiant to produce more reproducible results and less staining of glass.vare;it also results in a
clear solution of the reaction product, (A turbid suspension occurs when PVA is not used.)The Rochelle
Salt eliminates Interference due to hardness. This method is applicable for determining ammonia nitrogen
in drinking water, wastewater•+ and sea water,**A sample distillation may be required to remove severe
interfering substances, Also, albuminoid nitrogen may be determined using distillation. Interferences and
distillation are discussed in Note C. With distillation this method has been approved by the USEPA for
NFDES reporting purposes.
Ammonium nitrogen standard solutions for checking the accuracy of the test we available from Hach.
A procedure detailing use of the Volueae®Ampule Standards System of standard additions is given in Note N.
,, !s WARNING
Some of the chemicals and apparatus used in this procedure maybe hazardous ro the health and
safety of the user if inappropriately handled ormcidentally misused. Please read all warnings
on rhe labels and mad the softly section of this manual.Hazardous substances appear in italic
F typeface when they air used in the test and deserve extra cane in handling. It is always good
practice to wear safety glasses when hsndling chemicals. Wash thoroughly if concoct occurs.
Follow instructions carefully.
Sampling and Storage
Collect samples in clean plastic or glass bottles.Add one drop of Sodium Thiosulfate Standard Solution,0.IN,
for each 0.3 mg1L chlorine present for each liter of sample taken.Samples should be run as soon as possible
after collection.Lf storage is necessary, add 2-mL Sulfuric Acid,ACS, for each liter or quart of sample taken
using it glass serological pipet and pipet filler,Mix.Check the sample pH to be sure the pH is 2 or less.Add
more gcid if necessary.
i
pH Adjustment
Before testing, warm to room temperature and adjust the acidified sample to pH 7 by adding Sodium Hydroxide
i Standard Solution,5.ON,and mixing thoroughly.Samples preserved in this manner can be stored at least 24
hours. When significant amounts of preservative ane used,a volume correction should be made for the extra
t acid and base by dividing the total volume(sample+acid+base)by the sample volume and multiplying the
result times the final test reading.
- •hEepud Irom swlrakMah Fa Mr 8aemivr,u„id wvzr ya!Mi.rt..vrr
- --- `---;- ---------- •Ir.warrve...iK Nae C----- - ------------------ -------- -----
